Clean water in focus during Indian politician visit

India´s Jal Shakti Minister of Water Resources, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, visited Hammarby Sjöstadsverk in Stockholm last week. At this unique research and demonstration facility, IVL works together with other companies and researchers to develop techniques to purify and reuse wastewater.

– Water issues are global. We must all work together to find long-term sustainable solutions that are both cost-effective, environmentally smart and scalable. The countries that have come further along this road can help others by showing solutions and innovative systems for sustainable water management, said Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. During the tour, the minister learned more about ongoing projects at the facility. An important focus of research is the reuse of purified wastewater. In countries like India that are putting immense pressure on their groundwater reserves, this may soon become necessary. IVL has previously shown that with the right technology, wastewater can be recycled cost-effectively and purified to such an extent that it can be returned to the groundwater or reused in agriculture and industry. – With climate change, we can expect water shortages to get worse in the future and more countries will suffer. We must solve water problems in a more radical way, said Östen Ekengren, Deputy CEO of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. – This means that we must rethink and see wastewater as a resource. If we can transform the wastewater treatment plants into production plants for both clean water, bioenergy and nutrients that can be returned to nature, then we have a water treatment technology for a sustainable society. IVL´s relations and exchange with India continue to grow. In recent years, IVL has had an advisory role in Mumbai and Delhi, helping these cities solve their water and waste problems. In a new project, IVL will evaluate the construction of two large municipal sewage treatment plants in Mumbai. At the meeting with the Indian Minister of Water, an extended research collaboration was also discussed.
