To measure air pollutants on board ships, it is important to select suitable sampling locations. The pictures in the ‘Picture gallery’ show how the measurements were carried out on the investigated ships.

The indoor air quality inside the ship has to be compared with the ambient air. In this picture, gaseous air pollutants are sampled, outside on deck and protected from the weather, using six different passive samplers. Volatile organic compounds (TVOC) are measured using a Tenax® tube. This is a steel tube filled with adsorbent material. The grey cylindrical sampler measures nitrogen oxide, the red sampler nitrogen dioxide, the white sampler ozone and the blue sampler sulfur dioxide. There is also a white tube in the centre of the sample holder that measures formaldehyde.
