The Father of Green Chemistry receives royal professorship

Professor Paul Anastas, known as the Father of Green Chemistry, is the 24th holder of the King Carl XVI Gustaf Professorship in Environmental Science.

Thursday February 13, professor Paul Anastas held his introductory lecture as holder of the King Carl XVI Gustaf Professorship in Environmental Science, hosted by the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University.

Paul Anastas, director of the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University in United States, is known widely for his work on the design and manufacture of chemicals that are non-hazardous and environmentally benign.

Many research opportunities to fulfil

The lecture was held in the presence of HRH King Carl Gustaf XVI and was followed by a seminar in the honour of professor Anastas with several speakers, all prominent in the field of Green Chemistry.

The seminar provided a broad overview of fundamental green chemistry research and many examples of applications in products and processes. Much progress has been made but many research opportunities remain to fulfil the full potential of green chemistry in society.

The 12 green chemistry principles

A general overall conclusion from the presentations is that continued research and application of the 12 green chemistry principles will be a key enabler to achieve a sustainable future including environmental, social and economic goals.

For Mistra SafeChem, the seminar was a great opportunity to discuss green chemistry and future research cooperation with the distinguished visitors.
