Science Based Targets – A Scientific Approach to Fossil-Free Ambitions
The market increasingly demands that companies have clear ambitions for their climate work, with well-defined goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Science Based Targets (SBT) is one of several global initiatives and programs developed to facilitate this work.
One program that has become increasingly applied is the Science Based Targets (SBT), which is based on scientifically recognized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculation methods. The SBT concept is used in both the private and public sectors, primarily by larger companies and cities.
According to the Paris Agreement, it is essential to set climate goals and regularly evaluate them in an objective and credible manner. Science Based Targets allow the establishment of science-based carbon emission targets that align with the necessary reductions to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C. These science-based targets (SBT) should be measurable, actionable, time-bound, and based on the latest research. This approach enables various organizations to align with ecosystem boundaries and societal sustainability goals.
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) was developed with the aim of encouraging more companies to set science-based climate goals. It is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Programme (CDP), United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund (WWF). Over the past five years, this initiative has gained broad adoption and acceptance, with over 6,000 companies joining, of which approximately 3,500 have adopted and engaged in the Science Based Targets framework.
Below, you can download the report on the mapping and examination of whether Science Based Targets, international programs, and associated calculation methods can be applied in public procurement and in the establishment of climate goals at the municipal level.
