National Climate Target Efforts in Swedish Industry

As part of the government's work for a Fossil-Free Sweden, most major sectors in Sweden have developed roadmaps for fossil-free operations by 2030. These roadmaps outline what must be done to achieve climate goals and targets. A common conclusion expressed across these roadmaps is that "to ensure Sweden meets its long-term climate goals, public procurement must lead the way and become fossil-free or climate-neutral within a few years."

The industry roadmaps for fossil freedom by 2030 highlight the opportunities to reach set climate goals, identify obstacles, and propose solutions, both through their own commitments and political initiatives. Together, they provide a picture of what a fossil-free business sector could look like in the near future. A particular focus has been on advocating for the development of methods for effective climate requirements in public procurement, which drive the industry's transition forward through a climate leadership program for municipalities.

Some industries have progressed further in their transition efforts than others. Notably, the aggregate materials industry, concrete industry, construction and civil engineering sector, cement industry, grocery trade, and steel industry stand out. In addition to providing a more detailed description of their future climate work, these sectors also emphasize the importance of a holistic approach through a lifecycle perspective and call for political commitments.
